TO:  4-H LEADERS, MEMBERS, AND PARENTS

The Teton County Fair will be held in Choteau from June 21 to 24, 2023. The Fair gives members, parents, and the public the opportunity to see the skills and abilities cultivated by the 4-H program.  This book contains information on static exhibits and live animal 4-H projects to be shown at the Choteau Pavilion and the Weatherbeater Arena. 

Please read the Fair book carefully, as it explains all the rules and event procedures.

Please note the following important directions:

  1. Exhibits must be projects completed since the fair last year. Any item made as part of a school assignment should be designated as such on the entry tag or during the interview.
  2. Only one entry under any one lot number will be allowed.
  3. Put 4-H age (age by Oct. 1 of prior fall) and year in project on every entry tag. Entry tags are available online and at the registration desk at the fair.
  4. Put Division Number, Class Number and Lot Number on every entry tag. Attach entry tag securely to exhibit.
  5. Any 4-H member can enter exhibits under “For All Members” class/lots, without being formally enrolled in that 4-H project. For instance, if a member is not enrolled in any foods projects but wants to enter some baked goods in the fair, those would go under the Foods Division in “For All Members” class.
  6. Please note that there is a class for schoolwork open to all 4-H members. Any general schoolwork that would not correlate with a particular 4-H project should be entered in the schoolwork section.
  7. Please provide the Extension office with copies of important animal health documents: vaccinations for cats and dogs, and proof of official scrapies tags for sheep and goats, and bangs numbers for heifers.
  8. If a member is entering a project that would take a judge more than usual time to review (such as 20-page original written work or a two-hour original documentary video, etc.), please contact the Extension Office at least 10 days prior to Fair. We may submit such work to the judge prior to Fair.

 

We contract with and pay judges based on numbers of entries.

Please register only those exhibits you plan to bring to Fair.


Judging:

The Teton County Fair is designed as a growth event for 4-H youth.  Because of our focus on life skills, we use an interview judging process.  Interview judging places 50% importance on the actual exhibit and 50% importance on the knowledge of the 4-H member.  This process allows the 4-H member to:       

  • Prepare an exhibit creatively, carefully, and neatly.
  • Know steps and processes involved in preparing the exhibit.
  • Learn the cost of the exhibit - money, materials, time, and effort.
  • Explain decisions made while preparing the exhibit.
  • Discover problems as they develop and learn possible ways to improve projects.
  • Study information about the project topic.
  • Analyze whether the result was worth the cost and effort.
  • Gain life skills.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview time on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

If a member is unable to attend the interview, but would still like to be judged, please contact the Extension office. 

4-H leaders, members, parents, and volunteers are responsible for their own conduct.  Please be respectful of the buildings and other facilities, as well as the people involved in activities.

Ribbons and Ratings:

The learning process and final project will be judged for quality. In other words, the highest rating is not necessarily given in every class or division; rather, judges decide whether there are entries worthy of receiving top honors in each class and division. 

4-H members earn white, red or blue ratings, and corresponding white, red, or blue stickers will be placed on their entry tag. The matching ribbons can be picked up later, at the premium table, if desired.

  • After all exhibits are judged, entry forms will be taken by the 4-H member to the premium table and premiums will be awarded (see Premium section)

Ribbon Ratings Defined:

  • White: I tried. I learned. I have room for improvement and more learning.
  • Red: I tried. I learned. I did a good job, and I have room to improve and learn more.
  • Blue: I tried.  I learned.  I did well, met most of my goals, and can still learn and do more.

At the completion of all judging of all 4-H members, purple rosettes will be placed on projects of overall excellence.

  • Purple: I tried.  I learned.  I’ve done very well.  Now I must continue to challenge myself to strive further and think about sharing my skills by teaching others.

Additional awards may be given for top projects in divisions.

Cloverbud members will receive green ribbons for participation. 

Premiums:

In addition to ribbons, premiums will be awarded to 4-H members (not Cloverbuds) for static exhibits (Pavilion) in an amount that corresponds to the ribbon rating (White = $2.00, Red = $3.00, Blue – $5.00).  

NEW in 2023: Class awards winners at the Pavilion (purple rosettes) will be awarded $10.00. 

Please collect premiums in person at the premium table or designate someone to collect your premiums.

Exhibit Display and Removal:

So the community can enjoy 4-H members’ work, please leave exhibits at the Pavilion until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023.  Exhibits should be picked up by 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Any exhibits remaining in the Pavilion on Monday morning, June 26, 2023, will be collected and donated to a local thrift shop the following week.

Grievances:

Due care will be taken to prevent damage and loss; however, the Teton County 4-H Council and Teton County MSU Extension Office are not liable for damages or loss of exhibits.

The Extension office works with 4-H members to ensure that all judges and donors receive handwritten notes of appreciation for their support of the 4-H Fair.  Additionally, 4-H members and their families are encouraged to recognize the help and support provided by friends and volunteers with written notes of thanks.

DIVISION 0 - Open Class-Public Entries

This division is open to any resident of the county.  You do not need to be a 4-H member to enter this division.  All items entered will be displayed for the duration of the fair and will be judged as appropriate.  Adult and youth entries accepted.  There will be no premium associated with the open class division.  We encourage entrants to display any item they choose.  Examples are handiwork, horticulture, hobbies, and heritage work.

Division Four
Food & Nutrition

Food Exhibit Instructions

  1. Members may exhibit only in the projects or units in which they are currently enrolled, except Foods for All 4-H Members, which is open to ALL 4-H members.
  2. All food exhibits must be labeled with name, address, and lot number typed or plainly printed on entry tags.
  3. All foods exhibits should be placed on 6" paper plates or appropriate size to fit exhibit, placed in a clear plastic bag and sealed.
  4. Food from package mixes should be labeled as such.
  5. All canning, including jam, must be in standard canning jars. Rings must be included. Every jar should be labeled. Labels should be printed with name of product, date canned, process used in canning (pressure canner, water bath, etc.), and length of processing time. Entry tags must be secured to exhibit. All jams, jellies, and pickles may be opened during judging. Other canned items will not be tasted.
  6. A suggestion, not a requirement, is to have the recipe attached.
  7. For large recipe food items such as one-dish meals (i.e. lasagna, salads, etc.) bring one serving size for judging and display to avoid food waste. You can bring a picture of the whole item, if you choose.
  8. For items that are perishable and may not display well during the fair, please consider bringing the food item to be judged, and then leaving an 8x10 photo of the item, with a recipe and entry tag for display. If preparing a food that may spoil, please bring a photo or leave small samples of items.
  9. Judges are not required to taste all food items.
  10. Cookie definitions:
    Bar – Stiff dough spread in flat pan. Heated or baked, cooled and cut into bars.
    Drop – Soft dough dropped from spoon onto cookie sheet.
    Rolled – Stiff dough rolled thin and cut into desired shapes.
    Refrigerator – Stiff dough shaped into rolls, wrapped, chilled well in refrigerator so that it can be cut into thin slices.
    Molded – Stiff dough rolled between hands into balls, logs, crescents, etc.
    Pressed – Dough forced through a cookie press/pastry tube into various shapes.

Specialty Food Awards

Maryetta Hodgskiss Bread Award

Maryetta Hodgskiss' family sponsors a specialty award for a 4-H member baking whole wheat bread.  Maryetta supported this award out of her appreciation for agriculture and her desire for 4-H members to improve their skills using a locally grown ag product.  The winner of the award receives $25 to purchase an item to be used in their kitchen or to improve their skill.  Ideas include a class, cookbook, bakeware, knives, specialty flours or other ingredients, etc. 

 

Florence Weist Memorial Food Award 

Florence Weist was a strong supporter of 4-H.  She was locally famous for her cinnamon rolls that were sprinkled with love and shared abundantly. Her family felt it was fitting to use her memorial donation to support 4-H.  The Florence Weist Memorial Award has traditionally been a marble rolling pin and is awarded to any 4-H member for an outstanding entry in the foods area.

Photography-Digital and Film

Photography Exhibit Instructions

  • Photos should have been taken since previous year’s fair.
  • Members should check their project books for explanations of entries.
  • Display all photos neatly and indicate on front of photo/display whether the photo is film or digital. Prints that are 8x10 or smaller should not be framed or under glass. Photos can be mounted on matte, poster board or card stock.  Photos should measure no larger than 16x20 as a maximum.  Prints larger than 8x10 can be mounted/framed at the discretion of the exhibitor. 
  • Members should know camera and features used, cost of projects, type of software used, if applicable.
  • All photo entries can be edited using the following techniques: cropping, exposure control, filters, red-eye reduction, dodging/burning. 
  • Place entry tag so that it can be viewed when item is displayed.
  • Any photo in which artistic techniques are applied, such as: removal/addition of object, colorization, or any changes that affect the reality of the photo should be entered under the Photo Art and Editing category.  As appropriate, include written descriptions of techniques used for display with photo.
  • Titles of photos may be marked on front.

Division 10 Class 1 - Wildlife

Entomology

To exhibit in this category, you must be currently enrolled in levels 1-3 of the entomology project. 

Collection boxes should be covered with plastic or glass that can be removed.  Collections should be organized by order. 

When exhibiting after more than one year in the project, specify new collections for the current year.

Performance in preparation of each collection shall require adherence to proper pinning and labeling methods as described in the 4-H entomology project materials and other recognized sources.  Specimens shall be undamaged, and if moths or butterflies, the wings shall be properly spread.  Spreading legs and wings of other groups is not required but shall receive recognition if done.  Arrangements shall be neat and uniform in such a manner that anyone examining the collection can understand the groupings.

Educational displays may consist of specialized groupings of insects or related to any aspect of insect life.  Displays should be presented in a clear, concise and interesting manner.  The purpose of educational displays is to learn more about the importance, life cycles, biology, ecology, diversity, etc. of insects and related arthropods. 

Division 10 Class 2 - Entomology, Level 1

  1. Using pictures as a guide, make a separate drawing of each of the insect body parts for five different insects and be able to name the parts and assemble each insect

Forestry Exhibit Instructions

To exhibit in this category, you must be currently enrolled in the forestry project. 

If leaves, stems or bark are exhibited, they should be identified with a label near the object on the same page.  These labels should list (1) the proper common name; (2) location (city and/or county) where collected; and (3) date (day, month, year) collected.

When exhibiting after more than one year in the project, group specimens by year collected.

Educational displays may consist of groupings of leaves, bark, stems, or related to any aspect of forestry.  Displays should be presented in a clear, concise and interesting manner.  The purpose of educational displays is to learn and share about the importance of forest ecosystems and forest life.

Division 15

Division 15 is for 4-H members with market animal projects.   To sell a market animal, members must complete seven activities from their project book within the current 4-H year.   If members have attended a Teton County-approved livestock quality assurance (LQA) session in the current 4-H year, they will get credit towards one or more activities in the project book.  (Please see the table below.)  Members must have ample evidence of the activities being completed.  Notebooks, posters, and other display items may be used to enhance the presentation of what you have learned in your project book but are not required.

Teton County 4-H Large & Small Animal Shows

The Teton County 4-H Livestock Shows will be held June 21-24, 2023.
The Teton County 4-H Horse Show will be held on June 16, 2023.

All 4-H members may take more than one animal project and members must be enrolled in the specific project to exhibit.

 

Entries must be received at the Teton County Extension Office, Box 130, Choteau, MT 59422, by close of business on May 24, 2023. Late livestock entries will not be accepted.

 

It is your responsibility to seek clarification of any rules you do not understand.  Each exhibitor is responsible for providing his/her own bedding, equipment for feeding, exhibiting, fitting, cleaning after his/her animal, etc.  The Livestock Committee, 4-H Council, and Extension Staff are not responsible for the loss or damage of any article or exhibit, or injury to any person, although due care and caution will be exercised to prevent loss, damage, or injury.

 

LARGE ANIMAL GENERAL RULES

  1. Only 4-H members are eligible to show animals. A member having two animals in one class must have another 4-H member show the second animal.  Each member is allowed only one entry per lot.
  2. Any member who misses project deadlines will NOT be allowed to show or sell. This rule applies to ALL members with market animals. Market Beef must be in possession by January 3; Market Swine must be in possession by April 3; Market Lamb must be in possession by April 17; Market Goat must be in possession by April 17.
  3. ALL members taking market animals to the Fair will be assigned to either help set up or clean up the Weatherbeater. Each 4-H member with a market animal project should provide a $100 check made out to TETON COUNTY LIVESTOCK COMMITTEE, which will serve as a bond to guarantee fulfillment of their duty. If a member does not sign in, work, and sign out, the bond check will be deposited the week after Fair.
  4. Safety is paramount. The Livestock Committee, Extension Agent, or Judge is obligated to remove unmanageable animals from showmanship contests or market class judging.
  5. No tranquilizers will be used on animals. Any animal in question will be subject to veterinary examination and will be disqualified if found to be in violation.  All other drugs that would make an animal unsafe or illegal for slaughter are not to be used.
  6. All 4-H exhibits will be judged on the modified Danish system. In other words, the highest rating is not necessarily given in every class or division; rather, judges decide whether there are entries worthy of receiving top honors in each class and division. All decisions made by the judges are final.
  7. Dress code: Hard-soled shoes will be required. Tennis shoes will not be permitted.  Dark pants will be required.  The pants should be the same or one color, have no holes, and should not be frayed.  The shirt must be long-sleeved, collared, and tucked in.  No tank tops are to be worn underneath an unbuttoned shirt.  No caps will be worn in the show ring.  Depending on the judges’ discretion, Western hats may or may not be permitted in the show ring.  Belts and ties are optional.  All entrants will be assigned a back number and will always wear it while exhibiting.  These rules apply to the Shows and Sale.  Horse entrants must follow the Teton County Horse Show dress code (see Horse Show section.)
  8. All members bringing market beef, market swine, market lamb, market goats, dairy, goats, horse, and breeding projects must enroll in the showmanship contest. Members with both market and breeding animals of the same species must note on the fair entry form (due May 24, 2023) which animal they will use for showmanship.  
    1. A 4-H member’s age determines the proper lot number for the showmanship class.
    2. Age is determined as of October 1 of the current 4-H year.
      1. Pre-Junior: ages 8, 9 & 10 by October 1, 2023.
      2. Junior: ages 11, 12 and 13 by October 1, 2023.
      3. Senior: ages 14 and over by October 1, 2023
  9. Entries in the Round Robin contest will be Champion and Reserve Showman from each class: beef, sheep, goats, horse, swine, and dairy. If a 4-H member is a Champion or Reserve showman in more than one class, the first Champion or Reserve win determines which animal the 4-H member will enter in the Round Robin contest.
  10. Market beef, market lamb, market goat, and market swine will be weighed at the Weatherbeater by superintendent and assigned to a weight class at the Fair.
  11. No market animal can be shown in breeding classes. Breeding animal projects will be assessed as half of the market animal assessment fee per animal unit and are due by May 24, 2022, with Fair registrations. Breeding fees are Beef:  $60, Swine:  $50, Lamb:  $40, Goat:  $40.  If breeding fees are not received by May 24, 2023, you will not be able to show your breeding project.
  12. Grooming of all show animals is the primary task of the 4-H member, with limited help from others.
  13. Halters and neck ties are required on all beef animals when they are stalled.
  14. All market lambs will be slick shorn.
  15. Buddy animals will no longer be shipped with market animals.
  16. A Livestock Policy Committee consisting of three (3) adult leaders and one (1) junior leader, and one Extension office representative will enforce all existing rules relating to livestock. Failure to follow rules may disqualify member and animal from showing and/or selling. The Livestock Grievance Committee is made up of two 4-H livestock leaders, one 4-H livestock member, and an ex-officio Extension representative. Grievances must be made in writing. All grievances are to be submitted directly to Extension personnel.

Sale Rules

  1. The Teton County 4-H Fair Livestock Sale is a terminal sale
    1. All animals must be weighed by an official scale master at the assigned time during fair.
      1. For Beef, all Bills of Sale must be presented for collection at weigh-in. Your market beef will not be weighed without a correctly completed bill of sale.
    2. Animals must meet minimum weight in order to be sold at sale
      1. Minimum weights (lbs.): Swine 210, Beef 900, Lambs 90, Goats 50
    3. Maximum weight is the highest weight buyer has to pay regardless of true weight of any species. Example: If beef weighs 1,630 pounds, buyer only pays for 1,500 pounds, which is the maximum acceptable weight.  
      1. Maximum weights (lbs.): Swine 310, Beef 1500, Lambs 150, Goats 120
  1. Members can enter four animals of different species (i.e., one beef, one swine, one lamb, one goat) in the market classes. Only one animal will be designated to sell. You must designate the species of market animal you will sell on your fair animal entry form.
    1. If a member takes four animals of different species and the non-designated market animals receive grand or reserve in the market class, the grand or reserve place animal must also sell.
  1. Show order will be drawn by random means; sale order will be determined by the auctioneer.
  1. Any re-sell animals will be re-sold at the end of the sale.
  1. Market animal members MUST complete (7) activities from project books within the current 4-H year to be eligible for sale.
  1. Thank you notes to buyers must be turned in to Extension Office before market animal checks will be released. Notes must include complete address of buyer, complete return address of seller, and correct postage. Please submit thank you notes in a timely fashion.

Carcass Contest Rules

  1. All market animals entering the sale ring will participate in the carcass contest.
  1. To be eligible for the State livestock carcass contests (Steer of Merit, Symbol Excellence) 4-H members must have attended a Livestock Quality Assurance (LQA) training within the past two years.
  1. To be eligible for the County carcass awards, 4-H members must attend the carcass review event.
    1. Teton County 4-H will follow the State Steer of Merit (SOM), Symbol of Excellence (SOE), and Certified Lamb and Goat guidelines for determining grand champion, reserve champion, and the ranking of carcasses.
  1. All market animals of the same species entering the carcass contest will be harvested at a central location so that the carcasses can be judged.

Division 17-Small Animals

Division 17 Class 4 - Dogs

  • All dogs and handlers will be judged individually against a standard. Sits and downs will be done by group examination.
  • Only one handler per dog.
  • Female dogs in cycle will not be allowed to participate.
  • Dogs must be in good health and current certificate of vaccinations for rabies and distemper must be furnished with Fair Entries. (No vaccination, no show)
  • Judges reserve the right to remove a dog from ring competition due to health or behavioral concerns.
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times except as required otherwise by the official judge during the judging.
  • Non-competing dogs must be on a leash at all times during the judging and kept clear of the ring.
  • First-time exhibitors will show one dog.  Exhibitors who have previously shown are eligible to enter more than one (1) dog as long as not at the same level. Example:  Enter one dog in sub-novice and enter one dog in novice.
  • Exhibitors will be allowed to use bait, only in showmanship.
  • Suggested attire for showmanship--dress clothes.
  • Suggested attire for obedience--dress clothes or long-sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes or boots.

DIVISION 19-Horsemanship

Horse Rules & Regulations

Teton County Horse members will follow the Montana State 4-H Horse Show Dress Code and Judging Criteria, which are available at the Extension Office with the following exceptions: 

  1. It is expected that horse show members will interview during interview judging at the 4-H Horse Show.
  2. Levels 1-3 4-H horse members in Teton County will be allowed to ride their project horse regardless of the horse’s age, using two hands with any non-leverage bit.
  3. Horse project members must be assessed by a certified horse project leader. The horse committee reserves the right to adjust fair entries and enrollment levels.  Any county horse leader who has attended the assessment training in the current year can assess any member, provided it is not their own child.  First year   4-H horse leaders need to have an experienced or key leader in the horse area assist them while doing assessments.
  4. Every member must enroll in a showmanship class and use their own project horse in showmanship classes.
  5. Teton County 4-H horse members must be enrolled in the horsemanship project to participate in horse judging, careers with horses, horse packing and working ranch horse projects.

  6. Teton County 4-H horse members seeking to enroll in Colt to Maturity and/or Green Horse projects must have completed Horsemanship 1, 2 and 3.

  7. All horses must be ridden using appropriate riding equipment.
  8. No studs will be allowed in any horse class -- except stud colts under five months of age in the colt to maturity class
  9. Any 4-H horse member or horse needing special consideration, must submit their request in writing by the day before the Teton County Horse Show. Consideration will be reviewed by the member’s 4-H horse leader and project key leader and Extension Agent.  No changes will be considered on the day of the show.
  10. Not all classes available in the State 4-H Show guidelines will be available at the Teton County Horse Show.
  11. We recommend that your 4-H horse is immunized. If your horse is exhibiting signs of illness at any 4-H horse function, you may be asked to remove your horse from the grounds.  Please do not bring a sick animal to the Horse Show.
  12. Participants in the 4-H Horse Project are required to attend a helmet education workshop and/or view the video “Every Ride Every Time” once as a junior 4-H member (9-13) and once as a senior 4-H members (14 and up).  It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the 4-H member to see that the headgear worn complies with standards and is in good condition. The Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development encourages the use of ASTM certified/SEI approved safety helmets in all equine events.  Protective headgear may be used in all classes and members will not be discriminated against. 

  13. The 4-H Horse Project waiver and 4-H Horse Helmet Policy must be signed and submitted to the Teton County Extension Office yearly.
  14. Bareback and trail classes will be judged by following levels: Walk-Trot, Levels 2-3, Levels 4-7.  Members may enter only one class -- either at level or walk-trot, regardless of age of member.
  15. There will be a designated warm up area at the Teton County 4-H Show. Horses must be walked in all areas other than warm up areas.

Special Livestock & Carcass Awards

(All awards listed are dependent upon award sponsorship.)

Members must contact the Extension Office to request any award not distributed during the fair, for which they feel they have qualified.

Herdsman Awards

Herdsman Awards are earned by 4-H members who demonstrate excellence in care of their animal(s) housed at the Fair, as well as care of the Weatherbeater facility and all Fair equipment.  One Herdsman awardee will be chosen, if merited, in each of the following categories: beef, swine, and lamb/goat.  The Beef Herdsman award is sponsored by the Flying U Ranch in memory of Floyd and Betty Kesler. The Swine Herdsman award is sponsored by the Weatherbeater. The Lamb or Goat Herdsman award is sponsored by the Crawford Ranch in memory of Dusty Crawford. 

 

 

 

Carcass Awards

Beef carcass awards sponsored by North Montana Feeders

Award plaques sponsored by Choteau Lions Club

Carcasses will be graded with awards given to 4-H members owning the top carcasses and who have met the requirements of attending both Livestock Quality Assurance training (every other year) and the Teton County carcass education event (yearly).
