Montana Make It With Wool Contest Information

It is time to start preparing for the Make It With Wool contest to be held this fall. Get out your favorite pattern and start hunting for that perfect wool fabric. Wouldn’t it be great to make a wool outfit for the contest this fall and then already have an outfit finished for your sewing project this next 4-H year?

The fabric and/or yarn needs to have a minimum of 60% wool to qualify for MIWW contest. The District 3 contest is October 22, 2022.There is a $7.00 entry fee per swatch of fabric used and wool yarn used. These funds will cover the cost of testing your fabric or yarn for content.

Categories are Preteen (12 and under); Junior (13-16); Senior (17-24); Adult (25 and older); and Made for Others. Contestant ages are determined as of January 1, 2022. First place winners in the Junior, Senior, Adult and Made for Others categories advance to the State competition which will be held during the Montana Wool Growers Convention in Billings, December 2 and 3, 2022.

There is also a Quilt/Applique Project/Afghan Contest this year. The fabric or yarn needs to be at least 60% wool. There is a $10 entry fee and entry forms are due in by October 1, 2022. The quilts, applique projects and afghans need to be mailed to Jean Harrison and postmarked no later than October 15, 2022.Entry forms and brochures are available at MSU Extension Teton County, the Make It With Wool Facebook page or the Montana Woolgrower Association website.

Camp Dispatch

July 26-28, 2022, 35 campers guided by 12 counselors and 9 adult chaperones commenced to "Explore the Wild" at Camp Rotary. Most campers originated their journey in Teton County, but Yuto Koyama adventured all the way from Japan as part of a 4-H exchange program. Spirits were high as Explorers took part in many interesting workshops, sang camp songs, played games, participated in skits, attended a dance, enjoyed a campfire, and joined in an epic water fight!

Club Hubbub

Spring Creek 4-H Minutes

The Spring Creek 4H club met on June 1, 2022 with our meeting beginning with an animal project clinic at the Miller ranch at 3:00 pm. Those present were Audrey Lobdell, Boaz Lytle, Nick Miller, and Maili Miller. We also were delighted to have guests from the Old Agency club; Ainsley DeBruycker, Seely Neal, and Hayden Hodgskiss. Club leaders and parents were present from both clubs. The animal clinic was led by Brent Roeder who shared his extensive knowledge and expertise with the club members using the animal projects who were in attendance. Boaz and Audrey brought their market lambs. Maili had her market swine and Nick had his market goat. We were very blessed to have such great attendance with members and have Brent share health and grooming information as well as tips for showmanship and market classes. All members present were also able to practice showmanship with the animals present.

Following the animal clinic, the members of the Spring Creek 4H club met at the Choteau City Park for a quick business meeting and a treat of roasting hot dogs and smores. Additional members joined us for the business meeting; Leah Paulson, Anna Paulson and Polly Lytle. The first item of business was discussing our Club Rotation this year which is lining up Pavilion greeters for June 23-25, purchasing and serving the Interview Judges snacks for June 22, and restocking bathroom paper towels and toilet paper at the Pavilion and Weatherbeater buildings throughout the fair. A sign-up sheet was passed around and Jo Lynn will reach out to community volunteers for Pavilion greeters as well. The second item of business was to discuss the plans for the club basket for the Major Family Fundraiser. At our last meeting it was decided to put together a basket with an outdoors theme. The Lytle family contributed a lantern and insulated coffee mug. The Lobdell family will provide a blanket. The Miller family will purchase smores sticks and supplies. The Crary family will provide camp chairs. Maili made a motion to have the club purchase an insulated tote cooler bag to be the container for the basket with a maximum budget of $150.00. Anna seconded this motion. Vice President, Leah stated the motion and called for a vote. The motion passed unanimously. The third item of business was to have the club members practice interview judging with leaders and older members acting as judges.

There were also reminders to: attend the set up or clean up sessions that were assigned to each family last month in order to have the $100.00 deposit returned, remember to invite and thank your buyers and read the newsletter for fair specifics. Nick motioned to adjourn the meeting; Boaz seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 pm.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Jo Lynn Miller for Boaz Lytle

Old Agency 4-H Minutes

On August 1, 2022, Old Agency had a 4-H meeting at the Choteau City Park. There were 18 members present. The American pledge was led by Seeley, and the 4-H pledge was led by Trent.

The secretary’s report was read by Natalie. Blake moved and Trent seconded the secretary’s report as read.

Trent reported that he had a lot of fun at 4-H camp, and he had a lot of great learning experiences.

New Business:

We had a group discussion on what we wanted to do to reimburse Carli $60 for Jane Wolery’s retirement gift. Charlie moved and Grant seconded to reimburse Carli $60 for Jane's retirement gift.

The 4-H group had a discussion on whether we wanted to pay for our clubs dues in the 4-H year of 2022-2023. Trent moved and Charlie seconded to pay for our clubs dues next 4-H year.

We had a quick review on how to fill out your record books on z-suit’s. And we were also told that they are due on the 15th, and if you want it judged it has to be to Carli sooner than the 15th. The club discussed where we wanted to meet while the leaders were judging record books. Charlie moved and Hayden seconded to meet at the swimming pool on the 15th of August and the 4-H members can swim while their books are being judged.

We were informed that 4-H numbers are down throughout the county so at the next meeting everyone is open to bring a friend.

Ledger moved and Hayden seconded to adjourn the meeting.

Meeting Adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, Natalie Hodgskiss

More News from Old Agency

Old Agency 4-H Club is asking members to "bring a friend" to the September meeting. A great idea to get information out to kids and families who may not be aware of all the opportunities available through 4-H. Are any other clubs doing the same?

Challenging Champs

After turning in their record books on August 7, members the Challenging Champs 4-H Club celebrated with a swim party at the Dutton Pool.

School Service Learning Requirements

If your school has service learning requirements, please talk to local school administrators about how to record your service learning hours and let our office know. We are happy to complete paperwork, etc., but can only do so if we know your school’s requirements and you prompt us via email, text, call, to do so. Many 4-H events would qualify as service learning!

Do You Have Unused Project Books?

Please return them to the office and we will reuse them!
